Vlanda passed away Friday, April 24, 2009 in Lincoln.
She was born on June 14, 1935 one mile north of Ewing on the Hohman Homestead to Keith and Lucille (Hohman) Biddlecome. When Vlanda was five years old the family moved to Moline, Illinois. She lived there until reaching the tenth grade in high school, at which time the family moved back to Nebraska. Upon graduating from Ewing High School, she then attended Norfolk Community College for two years, earning a teaching degree. She taught school four years, two years in Inman, and two years in Columbus. In 1959 she married Joe Hegr, and decided to quit teaching and concentrate on keeping a home and raising her children. Most of the years of Vlanda's adult life were characterized by her willingness to be of service to others. This was reflected both in her decision to be a stay-at-home mom and in the places she chose for employment after her divorce in 1985. She worked for two years in Norfolk, at the Bel Aire Nursing Home, and six years at Region IV Services as an apartment supervisor for the mentally handicapped. In 1994, she married William (Bill) Malloy and moved to Millbrae, California. For most of the 2 years that she lived there, she worked for Poplar Recare, another facility for the mentally challenged. Upon her divorce from William, Vlanda retired and returned to Norfolk, living at the Odd Fellows Manor for 7 years. Then; feeling the need to live closer to her children, she moved to Carstens Gardens in Beatrice. She was able to stay there for about four years, but as her health declined she moved to an assisted living facility in Lincoln, then to a skilled nursing facility in Waverly. She enjoyed cooking and collecting recipes, reading, crocheting, and watching T.V.
Vlanda is survived by: her sons David and his wife Loree Hegr of Lincoln, and Mike and his wife Annie Hegr of Fairbury; her grandchildren Damien, Brianna, Adrienne, and Audrey, as well as a step grandchild, Vanessa; her brother Milton and his wife Maryann Biddlecome of Ewing; her nieces Bridgette and Gina, and nephews Scott and Marshall; and finally, her beloved friends in Norfolk.
She was proceeded in death by her parents.
The family suggests memorials to the music ministry at Christ Community Church in Beatrice.
