Funeral service for Vernon Brummels age 86 of Ewing were at 10:00 am Saturday, August 19, 2006 at Concordia Lutheran Church at Clearwater with Pastor Daniel Feusse officiating. Burial was in the Ewing City Cemetery at Ewing with military honor guard was provided by Sanders Am. Legion Post #214 of Ewing. Pallbearers were Grant, Zeke, Seth, Josh, Chris, Ben, Jeremy, Jason and Chad Brummels. Honorary pallbearers were grandchildren. Funeral arrangements were conducted by Snider Memorial Funeral Home of Clearwater. Vernon passed away Wednesday, August 16,2006 at Antelope Memorial Hospital in Neligh.
Vernon Harry Brummels was born June 15, 1920 at Hoskins, Nebraska the son of Harry and Ida (Furhman) Brummels. He grew up attending rural country schools. He enlisted in the United States Army on January 15, 1942 at Fort Crook, Nebraska and served during WW II in Tunisia, Rome, North Appennines and PO Valley. He was discharged from the Army on August 30, 1945 at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas. On September 28, 1945 at St. John's Lutheran Church in Randolph, Ne he married Frances Weyhrich his wife of sixty years. The couple made their home in the Randolph area where they farmed and he served as an elder for St. John's Lutheran church, Sunday school board member and was also a past school board member of District 115, Prospect Hill. They moved to Ewing, Ne in 1966 were they farmed and Vernon served as a Board member of the Ewing Public School and an elder of the Concordia Lutheran Church in Clearwater where he was a member and currently on the Golden Township board of Holt county. Vernon was also a member of the Alvin Kessler VFW Post #5545 and AVPS American Legion Post #113 of Randolph and the Sanders American Legion Post #214 of Ewing. Vernon loved to play cards, listen to polka music and visit with friends and family.
Survivors include his wife Frances of Ewing, 7 children : Gary and Lynn Brummels of West Des Moines, IA, Cheryl and Gary Meier of Orchard, NE, Jim and Lin Brummels of rural Winside, NE, Rod and Jane Brummels of David City, NE, Roger and Lori Brummels of Norfolk, NE, Ed and Sandy Brummels of Osmond, NE, and Dan and Jo Brummels of Ewing, NE. 24 grandchildren: Grant Brummels, Erika and Jim Shepherd, Catherine and Chris O'Brien, Rebecca Montgomery, Rachael and Mike Barlow, Zeke Brummels, Liz and Casey Daehnke, Seth and Julie Brummels, Josh Brummels, Sydney Brummels, Morgan Brummels, Jennifer and Tim Carlisle, Chris and Kristi Brummels, Ben Brummels, Jeremy and Shannon Brummels, Jason Brummels and Sarah Dunbar, Chad Brummels, Kari Brummels, Emily Brummels, Blake Brummels, Leyna Brummels, Kelsey Brummels, Trevor Brummels, and Ryan Brummels; 9 Great-Grandchildren: Riley Montgomery, Jack Barlow, Taylor, Zach, Austin, Cade, Jarrett, Alex, and Jeanna Brummels; 3 brothers Gilbert, Le Roy and Robert Brummels; 4 sisters: Pearl Warneke, Ellen Cunningham, Jeanette Wheeler and Verlene Ryan.
He was preceded in death by his parents, 3 brothers: Ken, Merlin, and Willie and 3 sisters: Mildred, Edith and Hilda.
