Funeral services for Luella M. Stelling, 96, of Battle Creek will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, September 4, 2018 at Grace Lutheran Church in Neligh with Pastor Kuhfal officiating. Burial will be in Orchard Hill Cemetery at Orchard. Visitation will be 4-8 p.m. Monday, September 3, 2018 at Beyer Snider Memorial Funeral Home in Neligh. Luella passed away August 23, 2018 in Community Pride Care Center in Battle Creek, NE. Beyer Snider Memorial Funeral Home in Neligh is in charge of arrangements.
Luella Maxine Nelson was born to Alfred and Edith Mae (Cunningham) Nelson on September 27, 1921 on a farm south of Pierce, NE. The family later moved to Orchard, NE where Luella graduated from Orchard Public School with the class of 1939.
She attended Wayne State College for one year and taught school for three years in District 102 south of Orchard. On August 7, 1943 she married Gilbert Stelling in Coffeyville, KS where they lived for 15 months. Luella was baptized & confirmed on April 21, 1944 at St. Paul's in Coffeeville, KS. They moved back to Nebraska in 1946 and lived southeast of Orchard. In 1962, they purchased a farm eight miles northeast of Royal and lived there for 45 years.
Luella was a lifelong member of Grace Lutheran Church of Neligh where she taught Sunday School and belonged to Ladies Aid. She was also a member of the Help-U-Club of Brunswick for many years.
Four sons were born to this union, Arnold, Bradley, Roger, and Alfred. She enjoyed quilt making, crocheting, flowers, gardening, and writing thousands of letters to whoever she knew.
Survivors include sons, Arnold of Yankton, SD, Bradley and Jody of York, NE, Roger and Connie of Plainview, NE, and Alfred and Janell of Neligh, NE; 10 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren with another due in the fall; 1 great great grandchild and another one due later this year; sister-in-law, Gertie Stelling.
She was preceded in death by husband, Gilbert, parents, infant sister, daughter-in-law, Shirley Stelling, brother, Marvin and sister-in-law, Edna Nelson, brothers and sisters-in-law, Leonard and Alma Stelling, Bennett Stelling, and Norman and Ardis Gehrke.
