Roger passed away unexpectedly on January 30, 2023 at Brookfield Park Nursing home in St. Paul, Nebraska.
LaDonna was born on November 7th, 1934, to Forrest and Leona (Smith) Book of
Cheyenne Wells, Colorado. At the age of twelve, she and her family moved from a life of
farming to Aurora, Colorado in 1946. As a young girl, LaDonna attended high school
and also worked part time at a drug store lunch counter. She enjoyed playing the piano
and spending time with her family and friends. In 1951 LaDonna was united in marriage
to Vern L. Hayes of Wray, Colorado. They enjoyed country life on the farm where they
raised three children together. In 1969 she moved to Fort Collins, Colorado. On
February 25th, 1972, she was united in marriage to Roger Race. She worked as a hair
stylist. She also managed a hair salon for several years before they moved to Bartlett,
Nebraska in 1978. LaDonna completed her GED several years after they moved to the
Bartlett area. She was very proud of this accomplishment. LaDonna had a passion for
gardening and yard work. She enjoyed her flowers and caring for the birds in the back
yard. She found a great sense of peace in the simple joys of country living. LaDonna
was a very talented and creative individual. She enjoyed knitting, needle point, and oil
painting during the winter months. She was the type of person that craved staying busy.
LaDonna was happiest at home with Roger. Family often spoke of how they seemed to
be two halves that completed a whole. The door was always open for family to come and
visit. Their children and grandchildren have some very special memories of time spent
at the Stone House. It was a very special place to everyone that visited.
