Funeral services for Gilbert Stelling age 91 of Neligh were at 10:30 am Monday, September 20, 2010 at Grace Lutheran Church in Neligh with Pastor Kuhfal, Officiating. Music was provided by Bonnie Reinke , Organist and the grandsons, Ty, Ryan, Ross, Jay Stelling. sang. Burial was in Orchard Hill Cemetery in Orchard, NE. With Military Rites by Creighton American Legion Post #74 and VFW #1151. Pallbearers were Grandsons, Troy Stelling, Ty Stelling, Ryan Stelling, Ross Stelling, Brent Stelling, Jay Stelling, Brandon Stelling, and Grant Stelling. Honorary Pallbearers were Granddaughters, Tracy Westrom, Amy Olson, Spouses, Kristen Stelling, Angela Stelling, Kelly Stelling, Miriam Stelling, Marie Stelling, Colette Stelling, Jackie Stelling, Bill Westrom, and John Olson. Visitation was from 4 - 8 p.m. Sunday, September 19, 2010 at Snider Memorial Funeral Home in Neligh.

Mr. Stelling passed away Wednesday, September 15, 2010 in Neligh, NE. Snider Memorial Funeral Home of Neligh handled the arrangements.

Gilbert H. Stelling was born on February 8, 1919 south of Orchard, NE to Emil and Hattie (Kiihne) Stelling. He was baptized March 9, 1919 at St. Peter's Lutheran Church in Orchard and confirmed October 2, 1932. As a small boy the family lived on farms around Orchard, NE. He attended District #102, Lutheran parochial school, and Orchard High School. In his youth, he was involved in 4-H and working on the family farm.
On July 30 1942, he was called to serve in the United States Air Force and Infantry 3 1/2 years. He served overseas in Germany during World War II. On August 7, 1943, he was united in marriage to Luella Nelson in Coffeyville, KS. To this union four sons were born, Arnold, Bradley, Roger, and Alfred. After being discharged from the military, they returned to farming in the Orchard, Royal, and Clearwater area. They purchased their family farm near Brunswick, NE in 1962 where they resided for 45 years. In November 2007, they purchased a home in Neligh and in March 2010, moved into the Willow Assisted Living Facility in Neligh.

Gilbert was a lifelong farmer and in his retirement years he enjoyed woodworking. He was a member of Grace Lutheran Church, VFW Post #1151 of Creighton and served on School Board # 77.

Survivors include his wife, Luella of Neligh, NE; Sons, Arnold and wife Shirley Stelling of Tabor, SD, Bradley and wife Jody Stelling of York, NE, Roger and wife Connie Stelling of Plainview, NE, and Alfred and wife Janell Stelling of Brunswick, NE, and 10 Grandchildren and 15 Great-Grandchildren; A brother, Bennett and wife Gertie of Malta, IL and sister-in-law Edna Nelson of Orchard, NE.

He is preceded in death by his parents. Brother, Leonard and wife Alma Stelling, sister, Ardis and husband Norman Gehrke, and brother-in-law, Marvin Nelson.
