Dwayne (Hike) Francis Hobbs was born April 14,1936 to Lee A. (Bill) and Mildred L. (Harding) Hobbs at O’Neill, Nebraska. He attended and graduated from Ewing High School. Dwayne was enlisted in the United States Army in 1954 and was stationed at Ettlingen, Germany until discharged in 1957. On August 4,1957 he was united in marriage to Marilyn Joy Weyhrich at Concordia Lutheran Church in Clearwater, Nebraska. The couple moved to Milford, NE where he attended Milford Technology School for auto mechanics. In 1959, the family returned to Ewing.
Upon his return to Ewing, he began to drive a truck and did so for his entire life. He hauled livestock until the early 70’s when he started hauling grain and fertilizer. In 1986, he and his son, Tim, started Tim Hobbs Trucking with two livestock trailers and started hauling livestock. By the early 90’s, they had expanded to several trailers to which he pulled one full time until his retirement in 2001. To all his trucking friends, he was affectionately known as his CB radio handle, Red Rooster. He and his wife, Marilyn, owned and operated Broadway Bar from 1991 to 2007. In 2002, he helped his sons, Tim and Todd, start Holt Transportation, a flatbed company that is still running to this day.
In his earlier years, he enjoyed hunting, fishing and riding his Honda Goldwing. He also enjoyed buying and collecting guns. He looked forward to the time with family, especially around the holidays. The family would congregate in his recreation room, share stories and listen to old country music (especially George Jones & Conway Twitty). He loved to watch Cornhusker Football and Volleyball. He also enjoyed having a vodka with Diet 7-Up and a cigarette.
