Delbert Salber Funeral services for Delbert Salber age 84 of Elgin will be 10:30 am , Friday, May 15, 2009 at St. Boniface Catholic Church in Elgin. Burial will be in the Parish Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4-6:00 pm Thursday, May 14, 2009 at Snider Memorial Funeral Home in Elgin and after 6:30 at the Church with a 7:30 pm wake service.
Mr. Salber passed away Tuesday, May 12, 2009 at the Golden Living Center in Neligh.
Delbert was born on December 4, 1924, on a farm southwest of Elgin, Nebraska to William and Margaret (Stoltz) Salber. He was baptized and confirmed at St. Boniface Catholic Church and attended St. Boniface School, graduating with the class of 1942. Delbert was inducted in the U.S. Army in June of 1944 and was medically discharged in December of 1944. He spent his entire life farming southwest of Elgin. Delbert retired in 1994 and moved into his new home in Elgin. Delbert was a member of St. Boniface parish, where he was a Eucharistic Minister and Lector for many years. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus Council 2411. Delbert greatly enjoyed farming the land. In his retirement years he enjoyed being involved in the Elgin Community Center and playing cards with his friends. He was honored in 2005 with the Pope John XXIII Central Catholic High School Roncolli Award. This award is given to someone who has made a major impact on the long term advancement of Pope John. Over the past 10 years he has given twenty scholarships to St. Boniface School graduates planning to attend Pope John XXIII Central Catholic School.
He is survived by three sisters, Josephine Schrad and husband Alfred of Elgin; Vera Buelt and husband Lavern of Hillsboro, OR; Gladys Reicks and husband Roland of Elgin; 1 sister-in-law, Elizabeth Salber of Elgin, and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Melvin Salber.
